Aotake is a historical tale centered on Genchichiro Yogo, a retainer of the Ii house whose courage is matched by unusual humility.
After Sekigahara, it is revealed that Genchichiro had killed a noted enemy commander but concealed the achievement. Even when offered reward, he refuses to profit from glory. As guardian to young Ii Naotaka, he also believes that courage must be cultivated through experience rather than protected by excessive caution.
Senior retainer Hyogo Takeoka is so impressed that he offers his beloved daughter in marriage. Genchichiro is deeply drawn to her, yet refuses because he fears others will say he advanced through his wife's family.
Years later, during the Osaka Summer Campaign, Genchichiro disobeys a retreat order and holds a vital attack route at enormous cost. His standard-decorated with a simple ink motif and prayer beads-remains unmoving amid the battle.
Only afterward does Hyogo learn the truth behind those beads. Genchichiro had never forgotten the daughter he once refused, who died before they could meet again.
"Aotake" is a moving historical story of courage, humility, duty, and a love carried silently for a lifetime.
