A homicide detective. A secret he can't hide. A case that will expose everything.
Honolulu homicide detective Kimo Kanapaʻaka has worked hard to build his reputation-tough, capable, and completely in control. In a department steeped in macho culture, there's no room for weakness. And no room for the truth about who he is.
Then a night out at a bar turns deadly.
Shaken, Kimo finds himself pulled toward a side of Waikīkī he's spent his life avoiding-late-night bars, stolen glances, the dangerous possibility of being seen. But when he witnesses two men dumping a body in a dark alley, his personal life collides with his job in the worst possible way.
As Kimo hunts a killer through Honolulu's hidden underworld-from Chinatown's back alleys to the city's most exclusive homes-rumors begin to spread. And the closer he gets to the truth, the harder it becomes to keep his own from coming out.
To solve the case, Kimo will have to risk everything-his career, his reputation, and the life he's built.
A gripping mystery set against the vivid backdrop of Oʻahu, Mahu is the first in a series featuring a detective learning that the most dangerous secrets are the ones we keep from ourselves.
