Dr. Thaniel Hale would have volunteered. Nobody asked.
When an Ubezhishche warship suffers a catastrophic medical emergency, the only available physician is aboard a passing Elysian vessel. The Ubez need a doctor. Thaniel Hale is a doctor. So they borrow him.
Thaniel has every reason to protest, but no time or attention to spare. Faced with a crowd of injured people who need care and no one else to treat them, his outrage at being abducted fades fast.
Then Thaniel discovers that one of his recent patients was a Sokonakoh prince. Before this emergency is over, he will meet another. This is startling, but he decides that a few days caring for a lot of Ubez and occasional Sokonakoh royalty won't have a serious impact on the life or career of an Elysian doctor...
