Most of the world worships the fallen god, Malasephus, who promises power to the ambitious, wealth to the greedy, pleasure to the hedonist, revenge to the vengeful, and to all, eternal youth and beauty. These gifts are bestowed by the Beckoning, but they come with a price. For the Beckoning twists the mind and soul, until they are willing to do whatever it takes to obtain their desires. But not all men worship the fallen god. In the lands east of the Dohminar mountains, men still follow the Virtues. Protected by powerful runes, they are hunted by the Malasephus's creatures, the nohetka and feral. When everyone he knows is brutally murdered, Jan swears an oath of vengeance, and the Beckoning responds.
Feeding his hate and anger, it shapes and twists him into a creature driven by vengeance. As he sheds more and more innocent blood in his quest to avenge his family, Jan must decide what matters more to him, vengeance, or his humanity.
