An idyllic small town is struck by disaster: days of heavy rain trigger an avalanche of mud and debris that engulfs the valley community. In a matter of hours, life for the residents changes forever. The floodwaters sweep away people, animals, and possessions. They also widen the cracks in some residents' lives and tear down walls that previously stood between people. Outdated ways of thinking are shaken, and commonalities emerge where insurmountable differences were previously seen. Ulrike Grossmann's multi-voiced novel recounts this transformation, touching on the experiences of individuals connected by fate.
