Dr Roger Mills, a mystic-religions expert is drawn into an MI5 investigation by MI5 agent Thomas Benton, after his former colleague Dr Jayantha Poornak is murdered in Bangkok while studying the ancient "Great Wisdom Chamber", discovered beneath the Ayutthaya historic park. The investigation connects ancient criminal doctrine, symbolised by the Kwaam-Roo, to a modern criminal organisation called 5T, led by the supposedly dead Garry Nguyen. The gang's plan is to infiltrate banks, blackmail political leaders, manipulate investment funds and funnel them to offshore accounts, while triggering an economic collapse, referred to as A Sovereign Default.
