A chance encounter with a stranger leaves Emily questioning her life choices. Despite making responsible decisions all of her life, Emily decides, for once, to take a chance. With trepidation, she contacts Cole, who introduces her to a new way of life. Suddenly Emily has friends and is involved in activities that she had never before experienced. She accepts Cole's way of life, and in return asks for him to step into her world for one night.
But Emily's happiness is ruined when Gareth, her ex, sets in motion a series of events that will extinguish all that she has come to cherish. Supported by some of her new-found friends, Emily battles on. Unable to decide what went wrong, Emily tries to concentrate on building her business, but memories of Cole plague her.
As Emily battles with loneliness and anger, Cole becomes a recluse, refusing to risk running across Emily at any of their previous venues. When his friends question the assertions made by Gareth, they finally uncover the truth.
