"ESPN Play by Play captured the DNA of ESPN." - Matt Levinson, Director of Consumer Products, ESPN
He took a dream and turned it into a national product. Then he lost it all. In the end, his legacy survived in the most unexpected place: a museum.
Center Stage to Center Field: The Making of ESPN Play by Play is a gripping, deeply personal memoir about ambition, faith, and the fragile line between breakthrough success and devastating loss.
Raised in a world of spotlights and stages, Randy Youmans was born to perform. With a celebrated dance instructor as a mother, a nationally awarded entertainer as a sister, and a father whose quiet strength grounded it all, he learned early how to survive in the shadows. But his heart belonged somewhere else, on backyard ballfields, where imagination ran wild and dreams felt limitless.
Driven by passion and relentless belief, Randy transformed a simple idea into something far bigger than himself. What began as a dream became a movement, rising from late-night meetings and uncertain beginnings to national shelves and a partnership with one of the most iconic brands in sports: ESPN.
And then everything changed.
Behind the headlines and "gotta-have-it" buzz was a reality few ever saw: broken trust, missed moments, and hard lessons about business, ownership, and identity. As success accelerated, control slipped away and the dream he fought to build began to unravel faster than he ever thought possible.
Yet this isn't just a story about a product. It's a story about purpose.
About perseverance in the middle of uncertainty.
About finding meaning when everything you built slips through your hands.
And about how faith can take what feels like an ending and turn it into something eternal.
From childhood stages to national platforms... from the highest highs to the lowest valleys... and ultimately into a legacy preserved in the Strong National Museum of Play, this is the unforgettable story of a man who refused to let his dream die.
Center Stage to Center Field: The Making of ESPN Play by Play will inspire you to dream bigger, fight harder, and trust that every step of your journey, seen and unseen, is leading somewhere greater than you ever imagined.
Because sometimes the greatest victory isn't what you build, it's the legacy that remains when everything else is gone.
