About
Private investigator Garrison Chase came to Texas to stop thinking about the case he couldn't crack.
While Carrie works a conference in San Antonio, he drives north to see Hank Drummond, his late father's best friend of forty years. Hank has a box of photographs and the answers to questions Chase has carried since his father died.
Hank's house is a marvel. Voice-controlled locks. Sensors on every door. A system that knows who belongs there and speaks when spoken to. Hank built all of it himself.
By late afternoon, Chase is sealed inside it with a technician he met an hour ago and three armed men working the perimeter. He doesn't carry a phone. Nobody is coming. Every lock, camera, and circuit in the house answers to the man who built it.
And that man is standing in the driveway.
