Five More StepsA Gripping Short Story by Jim LaFleur
In the sterile corridors of a high-tech prison, John Mercer walks his final mile. With only minutes left before his execution, he clings to one certainty in a world that has crumbled around him: he did not kill his wife. But in a justice system revolutionized by the Cognizant-a machine designed to extract and interpret a condemned person's final memories-John's protestations of innocence mean nothing against the cold precision of technology.
As the clock ticks down to his final moments, fragments of memory begin to surface-a shadow moving through his darkened home, a figure whose face seems just beyond recognition. Could this be the key to proving his innocence, or merely the desperate fabrication of a guilty mind? In a race against time and technology, John must confront the most terrifying question of all: what if the truth his mind holds isn't the truth he remembers?
From the electrifying imagination of Jim LaFleur comes a haunting tale that will make you question the very nature of memory, justice, and truth. With his trademark precision and psychological depth, LaFleur crafts a world just beyond our own where technology promises perfect justice but delivers something far more complex. "Five More Steps" will hold you captive from its chilling first line to its shocking conclusion, leaving you breathless and eager to devour every word LaFleur has ever written. Don't miss this masterful thriller that readers are calling "impossible to put down" and "mind-bending in the best possible way."
