In this explosive crime drama, clues to a killing trigger repressed memories in the psyche of a young woman who's tasked with battling emotional demons while attempting to take down an alleged serial murder suspect.
It's 1975 in a gritty lower middle class town in upstate New York called Mattydale. Eighteen-year-old Joan O'Shea is a quiet and unassuming dance instructor by day, and a purse thief by night. The extra cash is nice, but it doesn't outweigh her personal mandate to live on the edge and feed her ever growing quest for exhilaration. Her brother Donnie is aware of her behavioral tendencies and would express concern, but he's facing the struggles of his own unambiguous daily routine. Neither care or think about their future. Rather, it's all about what happens in the coming hours, the days ahead, the rent that's due soon. It's a plodding and reckless lifestyle until the sibling tandem uncovers what undoubtedly is some major evidentiary wickedness that seems to point towards a neighbor down the street from back in the day...and a killer. That neighbor is none other than Major Robert Krantz; a decorated U.S. Marine Corps Officer who left the military with distinction, and whose personal life is sprinkled with flamboyant and deviant sexual desire.
The O'Sheas team with an unlikely collection of collaborators in an effort to assist the New York State Police in solving the cold yet still active murder case from 1968. There's Agnes, an older woman Joan befriends while living in a boarding house arrangement in Liverpool, NY. And there's Marlene, who is actually an early victim of Joan's purse thieving escapades. Senior Investigator Marc Lawson, who can smell retirement, but who senses an opportunity for one last crack at attaining his coveted rank of Captain is also in the mix. But wait. There seems to be other open murder cases still on the books. Are they similar enough to label these cases as having been orchestrated by one single serial killer? It depends on who you ask, and when.
