About

What happens when the people who should protect a child become the source of his pain? What happens when opportunities appear but go unrecognized, doors close, and the future seems decided by the circumstances of the past?

Retrospect is a deeply sneak-peek personal novel inspired by Wright Aloba's life-from a difficult childhood in Nigeria, through family hardship and rejection, to immigration, education, work, relationships, disappointment, unexpected friendships, and the people who became his helping hands.

Retrospect is an unflinching, often funny, deeply personal novel drawn from the author's own life: a story of light missed and darkness endured, of the angels who appeared when he least expected them, and of a man learning at last that the past does not get the final word.

This is a story of missed opportunities, but it is not a story of defeat. It is a story about surviving darkness without letting it have the final word.

Wright writes candidly about childhood mistreatment, poverty, family dysfunction, faith, cultural expectations, justice, migration, and a few choices he made that shaped his later life.
Along the way, he asks himself questions many readers may recognize: What opportunities did I miss? What did my hardships teach me? Who helped me when I did not know I needed help? And can a difficult beginning still lead to an unexpected, good ending?

Retrospect does not ask the reader to excuse the past. It asks the reader to examine it, learn from it, and move forward.

At its heart, this is a story about the long journey from darkness toward light-and the enduring belief that everything has its time.

For anyone who has ever felt overlooked, rejected, underestimated, or forgotten, these pages offer a reminder: your beginning may explain who you are, but it does not have to define your ending.
