In The Forty Rules of Love, Shams and Rumi spent their lives bringing their spiritual teachings to their flocks. Unfortunately, "they were misunderstood, envied, vilified, and ultimately betrayed by those closest to them". Shams was ultimately killed, leaving Rumi in despair. The loss of his companion inspired Rumi's poetry. The loss of lives and love as portrayed in SHE IS ELLE likewise flows into words portraying heartache and grief while simultaneously bringing resignation and peace. The hurt inflicted by society, as Shams and Rumi experienced, is also evident in SHE IS ELLE.
