A life and running career at Penn State is interrupted by World War II as Howard Horne is thrust into a world of basic training, flight school, and OCS training in preparation for deployment overseas. After being recruited for a special mission, he crosses the Mediterranean by submarine and goes ashore behind enemy lines in Northern Italy. His mission begins with nothing but a radio, a gun, a group of people he has never met and instructions to stay alive.
