About

It is 1951 when Reeves Whitlock arrives in St. Clair, Nebraska, where his father has taken a job at the Bank House- a once-grand mansion converted into a savings and loan. It is his eighth town in thirteen years, and Reeves has learned not to expect anywhere to last for long. But St. Clair refuses to feel temporary. Under the watchful rule of his stern Great-Aunt Eugenia at home, Reeves must venture out to navigate yet another new school where he is immediately marked as an outsider by a trio of bullies, and must also contend with the uncertain promise of beautiful Nina Mondalez. Despite the challenges, for the first time, he begins to imagine a life that does not move on. Friendships take hold. Routines settle. The idea of a permanent home starts to feel possible. But when his father' s escalating trouble with the IRS and an Omaha bookie threatens to uproot them yet again, that fragile stability begins to collapse, and to keep his family in St. Clair, Reeves is forced into a risky plan with unlikely allies- one that will test how far he is willing to go to remain in the first place he has ever truly belonged.
