On a July morning in 2019, in a Nashville hospital, a woman from Mississippi named Victoria Gray watched a bag of her own cells drip back into her body - cells that had been carried to a laboratory and there edited by a molecular machine copied from a system bacteria use to fight off viruses. A single, deliberate cut in a single, precise place in her DNA switched off a genetic brake, and her blood learned to route around the misspelled word it had carried since conception. She named the cells her "supercells." She was, she said, being born again. She was one of the first human beings ever cured by rewriting her own genome. In The Code Breakers, E.B Cohen tells the whole story of how humanity learned to read, and then to write, the code of life - from a monk counting peas in a monastery garden to the CRISPR machine that is now curing the first patients. It runs from Mendel and the thread in the nucleus to Watson and Crick and Photo 51; from the first splice and the anxious scientists who paused their own field at Asilomar to insulin grown in bacteria, Dolly the sheep, and the tomato that wouldn't rot; through the GMO wars and the early gene-therapy tragedies to the discovery, in the humble curiosity of a cheese-vat bacterium, of the guided molecular scissors that would change everything. From the two scientists who saw what CRISPR could be, through the patent war and the Nobel, to the rogue experiment in Shenzhen that produced the world's first gene-edited babies and the global reckoning that followed - this is narrative history at the speed of a science still being made. It is honest about what we can now do and what we cannot yet do safely, about the difference between curing a person and editing the human germline, and about the oldest question the new tools force upon us: not can we, but who decides. Rigorous, vivid, and even-handed about the promise and the peril, this is the story of the most powerful technology humans have ever built - the power to change the code of life itself - and of the people who built it, argued over it, and are now using it to rewrite the terms of being human.
