In a decaying Helios Dominion scrap harbor, a decommissioned star-runner called the Driftwake waits to be dismantled. Former fleet officer Kael Rhyne sees the dying vessel as his last chance to escape a past marked by failure. Around him gather other outcasts: Nyra Voss, a signal savant dismissed as unstable; Dax Corven, a traumatized engineer; Lira Senn, a smuggler haunted by betrayal; Orik Tal, a Kethari exile; and VERA, a fragmented AI hidden within the ship itself. Their desperate theft of the Driftwake becomes far more than a heist. During the escape, Nyra discovers an ancient signal that cannot be perceived by conventional minds or military systems. The signal responds to contradiction, trauma, and cognitive divergence, marking the crew as something unique. As Dominion commander Admiral Serik Vale begins hunting them, the crew barely survives a catastrophic jump through a forbidden dead route, where reality itself seems unstable. Stranded beyond known space aboard a damaged ship they barely trust, the six misfits begin forming the fragile foundations of a found family. The novel ends with Nyra achieving the first successful decode of the mysterious transmission and receiving proof that an ancient intelligence has noticed them. The message is simple but terrifying: "WE SEE YOU." The Driftwake Theft launches the saga's central mystery: why does the signal seek "broken" minds, what is the true purpose of the Driftwake, and what ancient force has begun awakening in the dead spaces between the stars?
