In The Shame Instinct, author Jordan Ellis explores the hidden psychological mechanisms that drive financial avoidance. Rather than offering traditional budgeting advice or investment strategies, this book uncovers the specific emotional flinch that keeps highly capable adults from checking their bank balances, opening bills, or having honest money conversations.
Drawing on established research in psychology and behavioral economics, Ellis reveals how everyday numbers become fused with our sense of identity, self-worth, and past trauma. You will discover how childhood money scripts, the dangers of social comparison, and the fear of "losing face" cause people to hide from their own financial reality.
The Shame Instinct provides actionable overrides and mental reframes designed to help you decouple your character from your checking account. By learning to separate the objective facts of your finances from the emotional verdicts you assign to them, you can finally face your numbers, break the cycle of avoidance, and take lasting control of your financial life.
