Washington Square

A plain, rich girl in old New York is courted by a handsome man with no money, and her father tells her exactly why. James built it from an anecdote the actress Fanny Kemble told him at dinner; nobody in the book behaves well and nobody is punished for it either. This edition adds fifty plates of paintings by Edward Lamson Henry, Eastman Johnson, Winslow Homer and James McNeill Whistler, plus ten illustrations restored and coloured.
