About

WHEN DOVES WERE GOOD is a literary crime novel set in the backpacker underworld of late‑1990s London, where rave culture, addiction, and organised crime collide.

Nico Holloway arrives from Australia chasing freedom, reinvention, and the romantic myth of London. Instead, he lands at the Dover Castle Hostel in South London, a chaotic halfway house for drifters, addicts, backpackers, and petty criminals. What begins as a temporary stop becomes the centre of his new life.

Through Maddog, a charismatic, volatile Australian with a glass eye and a talent for bending morality, Nico is drawn into a world of police line‑ups, stolen clothes, all‑night pubs, underground raves, and easy money. At the heart of this orbit is Astrid, a magnetic Danish backpacker whose recklessness and confidence pull Nico deeper into the city's shadows.

By day, Nico works brutal shifts as a nurse in an overstretched NHS hospital, clinging to the identity of the responsible professional he once believed himself to be. By night, he descends into London's underground culture, where drugs, violence, and organised crime slowly become normalised. What starts as adventure becomes dependency on ecstasy, on the rave scene, on the dangerous sense of belonging he finds among the hostel's misfits.

The hostel's orbit drifts closer to the Cohen brothers, rising East End gangsters expanding their heroin empire across South London. Nico tells himself he's only a witness, not a participant. But loneliness, the seduction of being chosen, and a series of small compromises pull him further into a world he no longer fully controls.

The novel unfolds through Nico's sessions with Dr Sharmila Naidoo, his court‑appointed therapist, years later, after a prison sentence and under electronic monitoring. As he revisits his arrival in London and the relationships that shaped him, the truth emerges: this is not simply a story about crime or drugs, but about how ordinary people surrender themselves piece by piece through misplaced trust, moral drift, and the desperate need to belong.

Darkly funny, atmospheric, and emotionally charged, WHEN DOVES WERE GOOD explores addiction, masculinity, identity, and the slow erosion of self against the backdrop of backpacker London at the height of rave culture and East End gang violence.

Readers of Shantaram, Trainspotting, and This Is England will connect with its raw voice, immersive setting, and morally complex characters.
