Zambezi Reflections is Susan Ryding's insightful, honest and engaging account of two years as a science teacher deep in the Namibian bush. From dealing with snakes in her classroom and dodging elephants on her bicycle commute, to developing lifelong friendships and a deep affection for one of Africa's largest and least known countries, Sue's witty and unsentimental memoir is a hugely enjoyable read and likely to be an inspiration for anyone thinking about taking a jump into the unknown. The book weaves together anecdotes and experiences of her life in Namibia along with reflections on the country, its history, culture and people. The story begins with her introduction to remote village life with no phone, electricity or running water and takes the reader through the experiences of establishing herself in a new community and work place, the confoundingly complex processes for getting basic essentials, successfully buying a car with no engine or wheels, travels in the country, encounters with the very wild local wildlife, the realities of keeping healthy in a country with a 45% HIV infection rate and limited medical provision, run ins with local witch doctors and the blossoming of relationships with new friends, colleagues and students. Her evident humanity, passion for teaching, and interest in life elevates this book well above a simple 'what I did on my travels' account. You will quickly be immersed in Ryding's Namibian adventure sharing her journey from foreign curiosity to honorary local. Now more than ever, we need reminders of the potential for lasting and positive change that can be brought about through living and talking with one another. No quick fix, but a sharing of ideas and collaboration that takes time and lasts.
