When her Grandma Beth ends up in the hospital after a stroke, twelve-year-old Poppy Parker realizes she has to come up with a plan that will get their life together back to normal. Somehow. But how is she supposed to do that when there's a robber seeking to shut her up for good?
Frightened, but refusing to give up, Poppy soon ends up in the most unusual witness protection program ever: she'll be temporarily staying with the lead detective's mother. Who happens to be really nice, so Poppy starts feeling almost at home. She even makes sort-of friends with a girl named Lizzie, and happily befriends Gunner, a beautiful dog with an uncertain future.
