Stella is determined to give her children the stable home she never had. But since her husband's death, she has struggled to manage the family farm alone. Without help, she risks losing both her homestead and the dream of security she has worked so hard to build.

Bruce and his beloved Aunt Mary intend only to pass through Glory, but Mary's fragile health forces them to remain. Bruce owes everything to the aunt who stood by him when malicious rumors damaged his reputation, and he is determined to support her. With no work and few prospects, however, he faces an uncertain future.

A marriage of convenience offers the answer to both Stella's and Bruce's problems: she will gain the help needed to save her farm, while he and Mary will have a home and a means of support. Neither Stella nor Bruce expects their practical arrangement to become anything more, though Mary predicts they will soon fall in love. As they live and work side by side, sharing their painful histories during quiet evenings together, mutual respect deepens into affection.
