About

Sarah Goodine has already lost more than she can bear.

Her husband died during their journey across the Great Plains, leaving Sarah alone with three children depending on her. Then a stampeding herd of buffalo destroys her wagon and nearly everything she has left. Stranded and desperate, Sarah is faced with an impossible question: how can she get her children safely to California?

The journey west was meant to give her six-year-old son a chance at a better life. Now, with few resources and no husband beside her, Sarah fears she may not be able to protect any of them.

Davis Carpenter is struggling with losses of his own.

His wife and newborn baby died on the trail, leaving him to care for his two remaining children while carrying a grief he barely knows how to face. His dream of joining his cousin on a California ranch no longer holds the same promise, but with nowhere else to go, Davis has no choice but to continue west.

For Sarah and Davis, there appears to be only one practical solution.

Marriage.

A marriage of convenience will give Sarah the help she needs to protect her children and allow Davis to share the burden of caring for his own. Neither is looking for love. Neither believes their wounded heart is capable of risking that kind of loss again.

But five children have very different ideas about what makes a family.

As Sarah and Davis work together to survive the dangers of the trail, the children begin to draw them into a life neither expected. Slowly, shared responsibilities become moments of trust, and a practical arrangement begins to feel dangerously real.

Can two grieving hearts discover that love does not replace the families they lost, but can still create something new? Or will fear of another devastating loss keep Sarah and Davis from becoming the family their children already believe them to be?
