About

The Holy Qur'an (The Noble Quran) literally means "recitation"; also romanized as the Qur'an) is the main holy book in the Islamic religion, which Muslims believe was revealed by Allah SWT, the Creator of the Universe, to the Prophet Muhammad SAW. This book is divided into several chapters (in Arabic it is called "surah") and each surah is divided into several poems (verses).

Muslims believe that the Al-Qur'an was spoken directly by Allah SWT to the Prophet Muhammad S.A.W through the Angel Gabriel, gradually over 22 years, 2 months and 22 days or an average of 23 years, starting on the 17th of Ramadan, when the Prophet Muhammad was 40 years old until he died in 632. Muslims respect the Qur'an as the greatest miracle of the Prophet Muhammad SAW, as one of the signs of prophethood, and is the culmination of all the sacred messages (revelations) sent down by Allah SWT since the Prophet Adam AS and ending with the Prophet Muhammad SAW. The word "Quran" is mentioned 70 times in the Koran itself.

According to historians, several companions of the Prophet Muhammad SAW had the responsibility to rewrite Allah's revelations based on what the companions had memorized. After the Prophet Muhammad SAW died, the companions immediately compiled and rewritten their memorized revelations. This rearrangement of the Koran was initiated by Caliph Abu Bakar Ash-Siddiq at the suggestion of Umar bin Khattab with the approval of senior friends.
